For nearly 20 years, there was little talk about a potential Freaky Friday sequel. Fans loved the 2003 comedy directed by Mark Waters, which starred Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan as a mother and daughter who switch bodies due to a magical Chinese fortune cookie. However, when Lindsay stepped away from acting, a sequel seemed unlikely.
Lindsay made her acting comeback in 2022 with the holiday movie Falling for Christmas, inspiring Jamie Lee to reveal that she was in touch with Disney about a Freaky Friday sequel. Lindsay later confirmed her involvement, and the project was officially in development. Now, fans have more to be excited about, as Disney announced that production has begun on Freaky Friday 2.
Will There Be A Freaky Friday 2?
According to a Variety report in May 2023, Disney put Freaky Friday 2 into the works! Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan are set to reprise their original roles, with Elyse Hollander writing the screenplay. Nearly a year later, Lindsay confirmed the news during an interview on Andy Cohen’s SiriusXM show in March 2024. When asked if the project was greenlit, Lindsay replied, “It is. I don’t want to say too much, but it’s happening. And we’re both excited. I’m gonna speak for Jamie.”
In October 2022, Jamie Lee appeared on The View and revealed that she had “already written to Disney” about making Freaky Friday 2. “I’m creatively wide open,” she said. “Bring it. Let me be the grandma. Let me be the old grandma who switches places with Lindsay’s character. So then Lindsay gets to be the sexy grandma who is still happy with Mark Harmon in all the ways you’d be happy with Mark Harmon,” Jamie Lee added. “Simply, I’d like to see Lindsay be the hot grandma, and I’d like to see me try to deal with toddlers today.”
In February 2023, Jamie Lee told Variety at an event that the sequel would happen. “It’s going to happen,” she said. “Without saying there’s anything officially happening, I’m looking at you in this moment and saying, ‘Of course it’s going to happen.’ It’s going to happen.”
Production
Disney Studios announced that filming had officially begun on Freaky Friday 2 on June 24. The company shared an Instagram photo of Lindsay and Jamie seated in front of their trailers on the set. “The Colemans are back and coming to theaters in 2025! The sequel to Freaky Friday is now in production,” the caption read.
Jamie and Lindsay also shared the photo, along with a behind-the-scenes video of their photoshoot. “We’re back,” Lindsay captioned her post. Jamie declared that it was “FREAK OUT TIME.”
