Henry Cavill will not be returning as Superman. James Gunn has officially confirmed that there is a new Superman movie that doesn’t involve Cavill who has become synonymous with the superhero over the years.
Henry Cavill took to his Instagram handle to announce, “My time to wear the cape has passed.” The actor’s statement comes after he teased a new Man of Steel movie which was initially in the works at the studio. It reads, “I have just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran and it’s sad news, everyone. I will, after all, not be returning as Superman. After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life. The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes.”

It further reads, “We can mourn for a bit, but then we must remember… Superman is still around.” The news expectedly left fans heartbroken.
James Gunn took to his Twitter handle to share an update on DC’s slate of upcoming films including a Superman flick. Check it out here:
Peter & I have a DC slate ready to go, which we couldn’t be more over-the-moon about; we’ll be able to share some exciting information about our first projects at the beginning of the new year.

The Twitter thread further reads, “Among those on the slate is Superman. In the initial stages, our story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman’s life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill.”
Back in October this year. Henry Cavill had teased a new Superman film with a snap of himself in the suit. The actor essayed the role in the DC Universe between Man of Steel (2013) and Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021). He was last seen in a cameo during the post-credits scene of Black Adam.
